What makes Shaker panelling work
Shaker panelling is the quietest of the panelled styles: flat-fronted panels framed by rails and stiles, with no applied moulding. Because there's no decoration to distract the eye, the whole effect depends on everything being even — equal panels, equal gaps and rails and stiles of a single, consistent width.
- Measure the wall width and height, edge to edge.
- Choose panels across and down. The planner divides the wall into equal panels and keeps the stiles between them matching.
- Set one rail/stile width. Commonly 60–90 mm (about 2.5–3.5 in). Use the same figure throughout for the true Shaker look.
- Set equal margins to the skirting, ceiling and sides, then refine by dragging dividers or locking a width you like.
Where Shaker panelling suits
The clean geometry works especially well in hallways, stairwells, dining rooms and bedrooms, and behind a bed as a headboard-height feature. Full-height panels read formal; a half-height run topped with a rail reads softer and is a good match for busier rooms.
Materials
Most painted Shaker panelling is built from MDF strip, typically 9–12 mm thick and 60–90 mm wide for the rails and stiles, applied over the existing wall. The planner keeps each profile separate in the cut list and prices it individually, so your rails and stiles stay correct even if you mix widths.

Shaker panelling calculator FAQ
- What is Shaker wall panelling?
- Flat-fronted panels framed by matching rails (horizontal) and stiles (vertical), with no decorative moulding. The clean, geometric look suits halls, dining rooms and bedrooms.
- How wide should Shaker rails and stiles be?
- Most Shaker panelling uses rails and stiles of the same width, commonly 60–90 mm (about 2.5–3.5 in). Keeping them a single width gives the style its even rhythm.
- How do you keep Shaker panels even?
- Divide the wall into equal panels with matching stiles and equal edge margins. The calculator balances the panel widths and keeps the rails and stiles consistent.
- Is it free?
- Yes. Plan one wall, see the full layout, cut list and cost, and export for free. A one-time Pro unlock adds unlimited walls and removes the export watermark.
